Whether you are out of shape, in general good health, or somewhere in between, you can always get healthier. Here are ten simple things that almost anyone can do today or any day to improve their overall health. While they’re not rocket science, they are some of the most forgotten elements of simple self-care.
Take a Walk: There’s just about no easier exercise than a simple, everyday walk. You can take one on your way to work, on your lunch break, in the morning before your family wakes up or after dinner with a loved one. You don’t need a gym or any equipment; just put on a pair of sneakers and go.
Get Some Air: By now, most of us know that the air quality in our homes is much worse than the air outside. Go outside and get some air every day if you can. A little Vitamin D from the sun will do you some good as well. If you can afford it, you may even wish to invest in an air purifier for your home.
Relax: We live in a very tense world, and while some stress can do us good, a lot can do damage on our health—going as far as even causing heart attacks and shorter life spans. It’s important to relax every day, whether you do so through yoga, meditation, or even a simple bubble bath. If you have the money, you might even want to get a massage now and then—or simply exchange one with someone you are close with.
Sharpen Your Mind: We now know that the brain is very much like a muscle; it can be exercised and toned, no matter what age you are. To keep your brain in shape, do something creative and challenging every day, such as brushing your teeth with the opposite hand you normally use, doing a crossword puzzle, or planning a vacation.
Drink Some Water: Most of us don’t get enough of this life-sustaining juice, yet everyone’s bodies are at least half made of it and need a steady intake of water to be replenished. Skip a soda or tea today and drink a glass of ice cold water instead.
Laugh: The power of a good laugh is so underestimated. Not only does a laugh work your belly muscles, it relieves tension, relaxes you, and produces chemicals that pretty much make you (naturally) high. Do it often enough and laughter is rumored to keep even sicknesses at bay.
Phone a Friend: People with emotional connections to others are often thought to be healthier and live longer, as well as to retain their mental clarity. Call up a buddy today and chat for a few minutes for an instant pick-me-up.
Have Some Veggies: Does anyone really get enough vegetables? With enough of them, your body is able to do wonderful things for you—like fight free radicals, regenerate, and optimally function. Instead of that sandwich or burger, eat a scrumptious salad, or dip some broccoli florets in your favorite dressing for lunch today.
Breathe: Singers know just how important it is to breathe correctly. How do you know if you’re doing it right? Just put your hands on your stomach and breathe in with your diaphragm. If your belly expands, you’re doing it; if your chest expands, you’re not. When you breathe in, imagine filling your belly with air; as you breathe out, imagine expelling it all out.
Sleep: One of the worst things we do as a society is scoff at sleep. People who don’t sleep can get fatigued, irritable, and even suffer averse health effects such as obesity and memory loss; yet we always brag about how little sleep we get, as if it’s a badge of pride we wear. Getting at least seven hours minimum should be a priority for everyone—and if you absolutely can’t, aim for it at least once a week, or simply go to bed a little earlier tonight.
