There are so many diet plans out there, and especially in the low carb category. You can spend hundreds of dollars buying into those plans and getting the special packaged foods that go along with them. Some of them work, but many of them require overly strict reductions in foods you like, which can set you up for eventual failure.
A low carb diet, in general, is a healthy way to eat, but shouldn’t become a restrictive torment device. About five months ago, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 20 weeks pregnant, and had no choice but to restrict my carb intake. Following the common guidelines for gestational diabetes, I began limiting myself to about 120-140 grams of carbs per day. This is quite a bit higher than some low carb diet fads require, but still lower than most people consume in a day.
After nearly 20 weeks of eating this way, while pregnant, I have gained exactly zero pounds. The average weight gain in pregnancy is about 25 pounds, and while I cannot say for certain how much I have lost, it is a significant amount. I can tell in the way clothes fit, despite my big belly, and in the way I look overall.
If you are trying to lose weight, simply cutting back carbs, especially of the processed variety, can make a big difference. Don’t force yourself to eliminate everything you like, however, as you will begin resenting your diet and will likely give in and splurge. Make room in your diet for small treats, and don’t forget to get sweet fixes in the form of healthy fruits.
The bottom line is, with proper carb intake control, you can lose weight on a low carb diet but still enjoy eating some of your favorite foods.
