Looking for a fun way to stay in shape, burn calories and not go to the gym? Roller skating might be for you. Yes, roller skating—and roller blading—still exist! They are alive and well at a rink near you, playing everything from the latest pop chart topper to your guiltiest pleasure—which could very well be the same thing—as you zoom around in blissful circles.
Many Americans simply love to skate—and why shouldn’t they? It’s a popular choice for birthday parties, hanging out on Friday night, and meeting potential love interests. (Remember how Charlize Theron skated with Christina Ricci in Monster? Admit it, you sang along; who doesn’t sing along to Journey? You probably even cried.) Almost half of Americans even say that they own roller skates or roller blades.
Of course, love, fitness and blading doesn’t have to take place inside. A lot of skaters prefer the great outdoors to skate, making it a decent mode of travel as long as you’re not grocery shopping or moving furniture. Even if you are, haven’t you seen kids flying around with those skate-shoes doing exactly that? (Well, they probably weren’t buying groceries, but they were buying something. Probably some energy drink and Cheetos, negating the whole purchase. And being annoying while they’re at it. It’s one thing to be in a hurry, waiting for the speedy checkout; it’s another to get socked in the back by some kid speeding by with wheeled shoes.)
Skating really is a great exercise, believe it or not. A person who weighs 150 pounds can burn 590 calories in a single hour of intense skating—more if the person weighs more. Even moderate skating with the same conditions can help a person burn 330 calories. The American Heart Association recommends it as an aerobic heart-healthy activity as well.
Roller skating puts all of the body’s muscles to use, making it a great workout overall. In terms of weight loss, strength development and calorie burning, it’s considered equivalent to jogging—not bad! Skating is also said to protect against injury better than running.
Some celebrities who enjoy roller skating include Beyonce Knowles, Janet Jackson, Jurnee Smollett, Missy Elliot, NBA Slam Dunk Champion Fred Jones, Ciara, Bow Wow, Kim Bassinger, Mike Epps, the singers of Matchbox 20, and Olympic gold medal speed skater Chad Hedrik, Olympic speed skater Apollo Ono.
