Toxic chemicals have been slowly but surely becoming a big issue here in the United States. Many of the chemicals we have inserted into our everyday products are banned, after all, in other countries for causing health problems, birth defects, and even being linked to cancer. As more people become aware about these toxins and the impact they can have on their health and the health of their children, more campaigns are spawned in order to get products that contain them off the market entirely.
Tonight on CNN, we will have the chance to see Dr. Sanjay Gupta explain more about these chemicals in his investigative report, Toxic America. Toxic America will run both tonight and tomorrow night (June 2 and 3) at 8 PM ET.
Residents of Mossville, Louisiana have known that they’ve been at risk because of toxic chemicals for years. The town will be a key feature in tonight’s episode of Toxic America. A whopping fourteen chemical plants surround the town, and the results are showing within the residents themselves. After having their blood tested, residents have found that their levels of dioxins (sometimes referred to as the most harmful substances known) are three times that of the national average. Respiratory diseases, dying young from cancer, and many other health problems also riddle the community.
During tomorrow’s broadcast, Enviroblog will be holding an open thread discussion for the public to participate in while watching the show. Environmental Working Group’s Ken Cook will be debating “the head of an industry-funded front group” during Thursday’s show, and Healthy Child, Healthy World founders Jim and Nancy Chuda will also be interviewed.
Be sure to spread the world about the show to friends, family, and anyone you think would be interested in learning about how toxic chemicals affect our health eavery day. In the meantime, you can also take action by signing the petition calling for Congress to reform our current toxic chemicals policy. There is no reason for newborn babies to already have over 300 chemicals found in their bodies—and there is no reason for the U.S. to continue to suffer from products made with harmful chemicals that other nations have seen fit to ban already. If reformed, the current legislation would mandate that chemicals would need to be proven safe for use by children before even being released—which is a giant step we can take in protecting our kids and ourselves from these harmful chemicals.
