Ahh, Lifetime. Whether you love it’s tear-jerking, uber-dramatic made-for-TV madness or you hate it, you have to admit it’s definitely the women’s network—and I don’t mean that by any stereotypical way, either. Lifetime is always supporting women, holding campaigns for women’s health and issues and raising awareness about anything that concerns women. Sappy or not, it’s got the collective female back—and boobs.
Right now, Lifetime is sponsoring a petition to support the bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act. Sponsored by Representatives Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and Joe Barton of Texas and Senators Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Olympia Snowe of Maine, the act was introduced in 1996 and is intended to end the practice of “drive-through mastectomies.” These procedures involve a woman’s rapid release from the hospital after receiving an invasive breast cancer surgery. Many women are forced to leave only hours after receiving a procedure that should require longer monitoring—the same severity of similar procedures that mandate overnight hospital stays.
If passed, the act would mandate that women be admitted into the hospital for a minimum stay following breast cancer surgery. The act has been in progress—but not yet passed—for over a decade and Lifetime continues to push for its passing. So far, over 24 million signatures have been collected—it’s time to listen up, Congress!
Please sign on to this important piece of legislation today at Lifetime here. Though you likely have your own personal story—that of your own or of a loved one; I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by this disease at least somehow—you can also listen to women share their stories at the site as well. Lifetime is also asking that participants share any stories they’d like to at the site, especially those of such “drive-through mastectomies.” Lifetime will deliver the petition signatures to Congress and show them how many people support this important legislation.
Lifetime also asks that people call or write to their members of Congress expressing support for the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act. You can write Congress here or call the U.S. House of Representatives switchboard at 202-225-3121. 24 million signatures supporting this bill has to stand for something!
Men, please be sure to sign, too—your wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters could all face such a procedure and it’s important to guarantee their safety and care as much as we possibly can.
